Triathlon is one of the few sports in the world where as an amateur / age grouper, you can represent your country.

It’s an opportunity to have fun, challenge yourself, and wear the Iceland flag with pride. We sent a team to London in 2013 and to Rotterdam in 2017 - talk to them about their experience.

How can I get involved?

Only national federations can register people for the event.

All information about how to qualify can be found here.

Is there a minimum age for participating?

Minimum age for the ITU World Triathlon Grand Final 2019 is 16 years for the Sprint distance and 18 years for the Olympic distance. Check point for the age of the participant is the age at 31 December of the year of the triathlon.

What can I expect?

The team will travel and stay together. A facebook group will be set up to provide updates, and you’ll get a chance to meet the team before departure.

Sarah Cushing will be the team manager for the event. Sarah has raced in 4 ITU world championship races (Auckland; London; Edmonton; Chicago), as well as organizing the Rotterdam event for Iceland competitors.

Selection criteria

The following information outlines the selection policy and criteria for age group athletes in the Icelandic World Championship Triathlon Team to Lausanne, 2019.

Selection is based primarily on two key aspects:

  • Eligibility of athletes, and
  • Race qualification standards.

All athletes wishing to gain selection must complete a Selection Nomination Form within seven days of the qualification event - Saturday 22 June, 2019.

Eligibility criteria. You must on selection race day:

  • Be a citizen or permanent resident of Iceland - or have lived continuously in Iceland for two years, hold an Icelandic kennitala, and not have represented another country within the last 12 months
  • Be a current member of an Icelandic affiliated triathlon club
  • Have a good relationship with the Icelandic Triathlon Federation.

Race qualification standards:

  • Finish within 20% of the gendered age group winner’s time
  • Finish within the number of allocated slots (based on age group finished position).

Overseas based Icelanders

If circumstances prevent the athlete from traveling to Iceland to attend the selection event, they may still be considered for special circumstance selection. However, the following must apply:

  • Must be a citizen of Iceland
  • Must complete the selection application within seven days of the Iceland selection event
  • Membership of an Icelandic triathlon club is encouraged, but not compulsory.

Special circumstances

Consideration will be given to athletes who are unable to compete in (or finish) the selection event. Any special circumstances selection is at the selection committee’s discretion.

This includes athletes who:

  • Have entered the selection event and their performance was adversely affected by illness / injury / mechanical problems
  • Are unable to compete at the selection event due to health / surgery / other extenuating circumstances.

The Icelandic Triathlon Federation needs to be able to demonstrate all selected athletes have met our criteria and can demonstrate an ability to compete at a world championship race. Therefore experience with open water races is preferred.

If you have any questions relating to the above policy, please contact the Age Group Team Manager, Sarah Cushing at info@triathlon.is
